BEWARE, THE BLOB’s Richard Stahl Has Died

Richard Stahl, a character actor who transitioned from film work to television sitcoms, has passed away on June 18, 2006 in Woodland Hills, CA. He was 74.

Born on January 4, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, Stahl fought in the Korean War before attending and graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. In the 1960s he moved to San Francisco and joined the improve comedy group the Committee.

Stahl made his film debut in a bit part in the 1967 comedy Funnyman. He also appeared in small supporting roles in Five Easy Pieces (1970), Billy Jack (1971) and Slaughterhouse-Five (1972).

One of Stahl’s few big film roles came in 1972’s Beware! The Blob. He also had notable roles in Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety (1977), the comedy Nine To Five (1980), Under The Rainbow (1981), The Flamingo Kid (1984) and Ghosts Of Mississippi (1996).

A majority of Stahl’s career was spent in television, where he appeared on such shows as The Odd Couple, Barney Miller, Laverne And Shirley, WKRP In Cincinnati, Soap, Family Ties, Night Court and The Golden Girls. He was a series regular on the 1985 sitcom It’s A Living.

His final film appearance was in the 1999 romance The Other Sister.
